More Than a Coach: How Women Mentors Are Creating Safe Spaces for Girls Through Basketball

Every young girl deserves a place where she feels seen, heard, and valued. However, not every girl has that. Through Basketball Experience, basketball becomes more than a game. It becomes a place where more than 800 girls find trusted mentors, build confidence, and discover they are not alone. Women coaches across Basketball Experience are creating these supportive environments where girls can grow both on and off the court.

As women coaches, the female coaches of the program understand the importance of representation. When the young girls see female coaches leading drills, teaching life skills alongside basketball, they feel encouraged not only to grow in the sport but to open up about the struggles they may be facing. Coach Ann saw this firsthand. Early in her coaching journey, she noticed that while many of the boys spoke up confidently during training, the girls often held back so she immediately resolved to change that.  Cultivating confidence in young people is one of the core values of this program and every coach has been trained on how to cultivate this among many other life skills the program seeks to instill in the players.

After some time, the girls grew more comfortable with Coach Ann and opened up to her about the struggles they were facing, the training sessions became a trusted environment for them. Gradually the girls grew more confident through the encouragement they received from their newfound mentor. They started to speak up more during practice, became more open and asked questions they had about identity, belonging, appearance, friendships, and the future and were met with understanding and support.

Through every training session, conversation, and word of encouragement, women coaches are proving that basketball can shape far more than athletic ability. It can help young girls find confidence, build resilience, and believe in their own potential. That is the lasting impact of mentorship.
