AFD and NBA Africa Host Teachers’ Awareness Day to Strengthen Youth Development Through Basketball in Kenya

Agence Française de Développement (AFD), in partnership with NBA Africa, has strengthened its Basketball Experience (BE) programme in Kenya through a Teachers’ Awareness Day aimed at equipping educators with skills to use basketball as a tool for education, inclusion and life skills development.

The training session, held at Nyayo National Stadium on 26-27th February 2026, brought together more than 100 Physical Education teachers from across Kenya in a full-day programme designed to integrate basketball into learning environments in a structured and impactful way.

The initiative introduced teachers to the Jr. NBA curriculum through both classroom-based learning and on-court practical sessions. The training focused on basketball fundamentals, coaching techniques, and age-appropriate skill development designed for use in school settings.

A key emphasis of the programme was the integration of life skills into sports education. Through facilitation supported by the Kenya Red Cross, teachers were equipped with tools to help learners build resilience, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and social responsibility through sport.

Speaking during the session, AFD Kenya highlighted the importance of sport as a development tool that goes beyond physical activity, noting its role in shaping character, confidence, and community engagement among young people.

NBA Africa coaches and facilitators led practical demonstrations throughout the training, showcasing how structured basketball programmes can be adapted to strengthen both technical skills and personal development outcomes in schools.

The Teachers’ Awareness Day forms part of the broader Basketball Experience programme launched in July 2024, which continues to expand across Kenya. The programme aims to increase access to structured basketball training while embedding life skills education within school sports systems. Following the latest engagement, the programme is expected to scale further in 2026, reaching more schools and strengthening capacity among educators to deliver structured sports-based learning nationwide.
