Empowering his voice through Basketball

David is a Form 3 student in Dagoretti Boys High School, this is his second term at the school. David is generally quiet and likes to keep to himself, especially when in a new environment. He is still taking quite some time to adjust to his new school and classmates but he does not want to be misunderstood as anti-social, he’s just yet to fit in around the other boys.

Two months ago, the school started a new basketball programme, and nothing has been the same since for David.

“It wasn’t a nice feeling being secluded by others in school just because I don’t talk as much. My parents then told me to join basketball and play with others but I didn’t like it because I didn’t understand it. But now after coming for many trainings, I really like it, especially because Coach Chelsea explained everything step by step in every class,” shared David.

Basketball Experience uses a foundation-based approach that teaches the game step by step while integrating life skills that are critical for personal growth. The foundation-based approach means that every step of basketball is well explained and executed before moving to the next. For many students, this approach transforms their school experience too.

“I have seen the importance of basketball in my life now. I have learned a new skill outside of what I learn in class, and now I relate to my classmates a lot better and even other students who are not in my class,” added David.

“David is a great team player; he is always at every training and cheers the team so much. We appreciate him very much,” shared David’s friend.

Beyond skill development, the Basketball Experience Programme helps students develop self-awareness, confidence, and social skills. They learn to support teammates, communicate effectively, and navigate pressure from peers, parents, and school.

Like David, the impact extended to parents and the wider community. Parents attended sessions and tournaments, often witnessing changes in their children’s engagement, communication, and teamwork for the first time.

“At one point, the principal called David’s parents and was like, ‘I think you need to see your boy engaging with other kids in school because this is completely new,” narrated Coach Chelsea. “Most parents came during the sessions just to see their kids because they also couldn’t believe the transformation,” she added.

Through consistent training and mentorship, students have acquired life skills that will benefit them beyond the court including self-awareness, inclusion, resilience, and confidence. Coach Chelsea’s guidance ensured that basketball was not just a sport, but a platform for holistic growth.

“Dream big, dream as big as you possibly can because it will get you to places you never thought you could be. Believe in yourself too, opportunities are there for people who believe in themselves and reach out for them,” she advised.

“My classmates acknowledge me now, they see me, and I have many new friends now in school. I love Basketball.” added David in closing.
